The woman who brought a UN judge to justice
October 13, 2025
Justice & Care is inviting you to stand with modern slavery survivors by supporting our Her Voice campaign. From 13 October to 30 November, every pound you give will be doubled* – meaning your generosity will go twice as far to help women and girls like Mary* escape modern slavery and raise their voices for change.
No one is above the law. This trust was powerfully demonstrated when a UN judge was jailed for modern slavery offences in a landmark case earlier this year. Behind the conviction was one remarkable young woman who gave evidence against her trafficker – using her voice to secure justice.
Mary was trafficked from Uganda to the UK by Lydia Mugambe, who promised to help her find a job – but then treated her as a slave. Trapped in Mugambe’s Oxfordshire home, Mary was forced to work unpaid as a maid and childminder. Her documents were withheld, her freedom denied, and her life was ruled by fear.
‘My existence to Lydia was not important. It made me feel unhappy… I was asking for God to help me. I should have been treated humanely, not treated as useless or worthless.’ – Mary
Amid the threats and isolation that she faced, Mary found the strength to speak out and sought help. Her testimony led to Mugambe’s conviction with a sentence of more than six years in prison.
Justice & Care stood beside Mary throughout the trial and continues to support her as she rebuilds her life. Her voice has now reached far beyond the courtroom – featured in major media outlets like ITV and The Times, she is helping shine a light on the often hidden crime of modern slavery.
Mary’s story is shocking – but it is sadly not unique. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by modern slavery and gender-based violence. Every day, traffickers steal their freedom and use fear to silence them.
There are an estimated 122,000 people still trapped in modern slavery in the UK alone, and 50 million worldwide. It’s a big business, it’s brutal and it’s everywhere.
At Justice & Care, we work in the UK and Bangladesh supporting survivors to walk free, rebuild their lives and pursue justice. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them to fight for systemic change and to build a world in which modern slavery is a thing of the past.
Her Voice is her power. Her Voice is our call to act. Will you stand with her this Autumn? Donate now and your gift will be doubled.
